The Lady Roadrunners cruised through the first nine matches of the regular volleyball season, winning each outing, but last week they met up with two of the top five teams in Division III and saw their season mark fall to 9-2.

On Tuesday the Holbrook squad made the short trip to Snowflake, where they met up with the fourth seeded Lady Lobos who defeated their visitors in three games, 25-18, 25-20, and 25-15.

The Roadrunners match with only 22 kills, led by Teyah Goldtooth with 10. Terrilyn Lester added five; Adriana Monroe, four; Lauren Silversmith, two; and Shayna Carlson, one.

Carlson finished with 1.5 blocks, with Lester helping on one of them. Alex Jeffers-Sample led the team in assists with 20, while Darian Hollins and Silversmith each had one. The team finished with 39 digs, led by Goldtooth with 12. Demi Phaturos added eight; Jeffers-Sample, five; Monroe, four; Silversmith and Ashley Attakai, three each; and Carlson, one. Monroe, Silversmith and Goldtooth each served an ace.

One of Snowflake’s two losses this year came against top ranked Monument Valley, which was Holbrook’s opponent on Saturday. The Lady Mustangs have a perfect 11-0 non-tournament record and should be the number one seed in the upcoming state tournament.

Following a long bus ride to Kayenta, the Roadrunners needed to play a perfect match to have a chance. Unfortunately for Holbrook fans, that didn’t happen. Monument took the match, winning easily in three games, 25-13, 25-13, and 25-15.

Holbrook had only 18 kills in the match, again led by Goldtooth with 12. Lester and Monroe had two each, and Dena Kinlicheenie and Silversmith added one apiece. Goldtooth contributed 1.5 blocks, Lester had a half a block and Carlson added a single block. Dena Kinlicheenie led the team in assists accounting for eight of the 15. Jeffers-Sample contributed five and Carlson had the other two. Goldtooth led the squad in digs with nine, followed by Monroe with eight; Phaturos and Dena Kinlicheenie, six each; Silversmith, three; Jeffers-Sample, two; and Attakai, Dishie Kinlicheenie and Carlson, one each. Monroe, Jeffers-Sample and Dena Kinlicheenie each served an ace.

After hosting Window Rock on Tuesday, the Roadrunners will have some time off for fall break. They will resume play on Thursday, Oct. 23, with a home match against highly ranked Tuba City. Despite the two losses, Holbrook remained sixth in the power point rankings when this week began.
