By Greg Perkins The Roadrunners snapped a losing streak on Friday with a 17-2 road win at Globe after dropping their ninth straight game a day earlier, a tough 5-3 loss to Mogollon in Heber. The Holbrook squad started quickly against the Globe Tigers, scoring four first inning runs, then really opened things up with an additional six runs in the second. The Roadrunners led 11-0 going into the bottom of the third, where the Tigers scored their only two runs. With six more runs in the top of the fourth the Roadrunners ended the game under the 10-run rule after five with the big win. Holbrook collected 16 hits, made two errors and left six on base. Globe finished with just six hits, made nine errors and left four on base. Trevor Barton earned the win on the hill, working all five innings. He faced 21 Tiger batters, allowing just the two runs, only one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. At the plate, Cade Maestas went 2 for 5 with a stolen base and scored twice. Buddy Wagoner was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and scored twice. Carlos Quintana was 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs, walked once and scored three runs. Nikko Ferniza went 4 for 4 with a double, an RBI and scored three runs. Barton was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a double and scored once. Julian Garcia went 1 for 3, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, had four RBIs and scored three times. Nick Robinson went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, walked once and scored once. Tristan Baldonado went 1 for 3, was hit by a pitch and scored once. Ben Nafziger went 1 for 3, stole a base, had one RBI and scored once. Holbrook could have used some of those runs in Thursday’s road loss to Mogollon. The Birds finished with only four hits with 4 errors and left six on base in the 5-3 loss. Mogollon scored five runs on nine hits, made one error and also left six on base. The Mustangs took the early lead with two first inning runs, then added another in the third to lead 3-0. Holbrook cut into that margin with two in the fourth, but after giving up another in the home half of the fourth, still trailed 4-2. The Birds trimmed one off that lead with a score in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get. Mogollon added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia went 1 for 2 and stole two bases. Quintana was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Ferniza was 0 for 2, but walked once, reached once on an error, and had two RBIs. Barton went 1 for 3, as did Robinson. On the hill, Quintana worked 52/3 innings, facing 28 batters. He allowed five runs, all earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and walked one. Ferniza faced just one batter without giving up a hit. The Roadrunners will play on Thursday at Snowflake in their only action this week. Next week they wrap up the regular season with games with Alchesay on Tuesday at Whiteriver and against St. Johns on Wednesday at home. They may well need to win all three games to reach the post-season. Heading into this week they were ranked outside the top 30 and need to get inside the top 24 in the rankings to extend their season.
