By Tammy Gray Holbrook High School students are using a role-reversing pageant to raise money for scholarships and the Ronald McDonald House. Student Body President Alizia Foster explained that the Mr. Roadrunner contest currently underway at the school is meant to be a fun way for students to compete and to give back to the community. As part of the contest, candidates for Mr. Roadrunner raise funds individually and as a group. The goal is to raise a total of $5,000 over the course of the contest. Of those funds, $1,000 will be donated toward the Travis Yazzie Memorial Scholarship fund and the remainder will be given to the Ronald McDonald House. Foster noted that the contest, which has been held for several years, was started to help support the scholarship, which is awarded to HHS students to help them attend college. The scholarship is in memory of Holbrook student Travis Yazzie, who died of leukemia. According to Foster, the remaining funds were originally donated to a leukemia research organization, but the student council decided to direct those funds to the Ronald McDonald House after learning that 18 families from Holbrook have stayed at the house during cancer treatment. This year there are seven contestants in the Mr. Roadrunner contest, including Coy Begay, Kevin Self, CJ Plumb, Miguel Martinez, Nehemiah Manygoats, Dendrick Jones and Michael Locaspino. The contestants will be judged on personality, the amount of money raised and their answers to questions during a pageant scheduled for April 30. So far, the Mr. Roadrunner candidates have raised funds by serving as waiters at the Hopi Travel Plaza and Denny’s, as well as holding a baseball clinic, a Valentine’s Day dance and a wrestling clinic. They are planning a color run for March 15, and are also working to meet a school-wide challenge issued by Principal Lance Phaturos. Foster explained that Phaturos has told the candidates that if they can raise $200 from their fellow students, he will wear a tutu to school.
