Both Holbrook basketball teams have qualified for the state tournament, which gets underway this week at various sites around the state. The Roadrunners finished the season ranked No. 22 in the overall standings and haven’t played since Feb. 7, as they did not qualify for the sectional tournament. They were slated to travel to Northwest Christian High School in Phoenix on Tuesday night to face the 11th ranked Crusaders on their home floor. If the Roadrunners pull off the upset, they will face sixth ranked Combs at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at Copper Canyon High School in Glendale. The Lady Roadrunners fell to Snowflake in the semifinal round of the sectional tourney last Tuesday. Despite that loss the Lady Roadrunners still finished as the 11th overall seed, and will host Ganado in the first round of the state tournament at 6 o’clock tonight (Feb. 19) at Muñoz Gym. Holbrook is hosting a state tournament game for the second time in as many years and hopes to have the post-season gather momentum on the home floor much like it did to kick off last year’s final four run. “Despite struggling at the end of the season, these girls earned this first round home game, and they hope to see a large fan base at home (tonight),” said Coach Greg Perkins. “The girls have overcome a lot this season to get here and we want to advance even further. With only 24 teams left, everyone comes in with the same 0-0 mark. Those who can survive will advance. With some recent injuries we need some of our younger girls to step up for the state tournament. I believe they will.” If the Lady Birds get past the Lady Hornets tonight, they will face sixth seeded Estrella Foothills on Saturday night, Feb. 22, at Copper Canyon High School.
