By Tammy Gray Enrollment in the Joseph City School District is down compared to last year, the district governing board learned during a meeting on Jan. 21. Business Manager Steve Mills advised the board that enrollment on the 100th day of school last year was 456 and this year it was 424, a decrease of 32 students. He explained that funding is based on the previous year’s enrollment, so next year there will be a slight decrease in funding. The decrease will have the most impact if enrollment rises next year, when the school is being funded based on lower numbers this year. In other action, the board: * Elected Eldon Larsen president of the board, and re-elected Jennie Miller as the clerk. * Tabled a proposed solar project to allow staff more time to gather information. Superintendent Bryan Fields told the board that it had been determined that the elementary school’s roof is capable of supporting the weight of the solar panels and a separate canopy structure is also feasible, but more information is forthcoming. * Following an executive session, approved a $2,000 stipend for Mills. The term of the stipend is January through June 30, and compensates for the additional duties taken on by Mills. * Approved the meeting schedule for the upcoming year, with regular meetings to be held at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. * Made the following special appointments for fiscal year 2014: Judy Young as assistant track coach and Kendra Wouters as assistant high school softball coach. Approved volunteers include: Lisa Lampsa, junior high track; and Kourtney Hendricks, John Mitchell, Lillian Neal and Britney Smith, Ski Club. * Recognized Teachers of the Month Janella Perkins and Judy Young. The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
