By Greg Perkins The Holbrook wrestlers posted their best finish in seven years at the Doc Wright Invitational over the weekend in Winslow, finishing in third place behind only Dobson and Mesa. The Roadrunners had one individual champion in Shem Bowman and one runner-up winner, Nikko Ferniza. Head Coach John Bokker was pleased with his team’s performance, noting, “This is our best finish at this tournament since 2007 and this year had much tougher competition. Our wrestlers continue to improve each week. Win or lose I was proud of all the wrestlers with how hard they fought every match. There were some outstanding wrestlers and we represented the Holbrook wrestling tradition of being winners. “We had six overall placers. Theron Johns had only one loss to the eventual champion. He dominated the rest of his matches and walked away with third. “James Ramirez ran into a tough wrestler from Nevada, then fought back for a fourth place finish. “Nikko Ferniza had an outstanding tournament, taking second. “Shem Bowman battled through a very tough weight class, beating a Flagstaff wrestler who only had one loss in the semifinals and destroyed his opponent in finals to take first,” said the coach. “CJ Plumb came back from an early loss to a Mesa wrestler by defeating him in the consolation semifinals going on to take fourth. “Angel Aguilera was our final placer, taking fifth. Angel is becoming a better wrestler every time he steps onto the mat,” said Coach Bokker. Individually, Sam Plumb went 2-2; Domonic Spencer, 2-2; Theron Johns, 5-1; James Ramirez, 4-2; Levi McClellan, 3-2; Noah Barela, 0-2; Justin Richards, 1-2; Jedde Bowman, 0-2; Clayton Hunt, 2-2; Kevin Self, 4-2; Nikko Ferniza, 3-1; Shem Bowman, 4-0; CJ Plumb, 6-2; and Angel Aguilera, 4-2. Dobson took the team title with 198.02 points followed by Mesa with 182.53 and Holbrook with 177.54. Basha placed fourth with 163.55, followed by St. Johns in fifth place with 161.56. Thirty-eight teams scored points in the meet.
