Playing in Globe on Saturday, Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners used a big second period to take command of a game they eventually won 56-27. Quanyah Lester opened the game in the starting rotation and responded with 10 first period points, pacing the Birds to a 16-2 first period lead. Teyah Goldtooth and Shandie Demuth each scored eight in the second as part of a 29-point scoring onslaught for the Roadrunners, giving them a 45-11 halftime lead. Globe outscored Holbrook in both the third and fourth periods, but the Roadrunners were never in danger of giving up their 17th win of the season. Quanyah Lester led the Roadrunners with 16 points. Demuth added 10; Goldooth, 8; Adriana Monroe, 6; Rochelle Nez and Cheyenne Lester, 5 each; Laurie Brown, 4; and Tamara Yazzie, 2. “This was a game we needed after a bit of a stressful week. The girls had some fun on this trip and we picked up another win,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “We know we have a tough schedule ahead in the near future so we need to pile up the power point wins while we can. “I thought Quanyah played well on offense and it was good to see Shandie hitting her outside shots again. We still need to play harder especially on defense in order to be able to advance very far in the state tournament.” With the win Holbrook improved to 17-4 on the season and moved to 9-1 in power point contests. The Birds headed into this week ranked third in the division. They will host Blue Ridge tonight (Jan. 22), then welcome in Show Low on Friday. Saturday begins a tough three-game stretch, all on the road and all against quality teams as they face Chinle, Winslow and Tuba City. “Those three games will tell us a lot about where we really stand as the state tournament approaches. I know these girls can be a good team if we play well on both ends of the court for four periods. We need to step up our intensity and our effort to gain some momentum and get as high of seeding as possible,” said the coach.
