By L. Parsons Each year, the Arizona Capitol Times awards a female leader with the title of Woman of the Year from a bevy of women in various commercial, municipal and non-profit sectors who are named Women Achievers. This year, Winslow’s Mayor, Roberta Cano was nominated for the title and was recognized as a Woman Achiever. She was one of 21 nominees in various leadership categories. Cano was honored to be among the nominees in the Public Service category. She said, “It was an overwhelming honor to be acknowledged alongside some of the best and brightest women in our state.” Winslow Police Lieutenant Ron Blass was responsible for submitting Cano’s nomination. He wrote, “In just under one year as an elected official, Mayor Cano has strived to unite all departments and employees in the City of Winslow by creating an inclusive and open minded environment. She is always available for her staff and gives much of her personal time helping facilitate events and answering citizen concerns and complaints.” He specifically mentioned the role Cano played in facilitating a citywide compensation study that resulted in salary adjustments for all city employees, bringing the City of Winslow as an employer to a more competitive and comparable position. Blass continued, “Cano has not only served to help Winslow to improve, but has also been helpful to our neighbors. In July, the area was affected by severe thunderstorms that resulted in flooding and closed roads on the nearby Navajo Nation. Particularly, in the community of Bird Springs 16 families were unable to leave their homes due to the impassable roads. Cano worked with partners to set up a drop off/pick up point as part of a drive for donations of non-perishable food, water and livestock feed for the families impacted by the storm. Facilitating the donation drive to let citizens of Winslow help our neighbors in need deserved recognition.” As part of the Women Achievers program, a virtual award show was presented. During the show, the announcer said this of Cano, “Cano brings a fresh and multi-cultured perspective to city government and public service, she has utilized her leadership to create open communication and lasting relationships among the diverse population of her Northern Arizona hometown.” He continued, “One of the many things she hopes to accomplish during her term in office is to bring change and inspire the younger generation to become more active in their community.” Cano submitted a statement to the award show as well, but was unable to attend the presentation live because, as she explained, “It was on the same night as our city council meeting and if I didn’t show up, we would not have had a quorum. I had to be there so the sale of the rodeo grounds could be approved because we must continue to move forward.” In the statement that she had prepared she wrote, “I come from a long line of very strong women and they instilled in me from a young age to be diligent, fair and honest. And to be a spokesperson and an advocate for those who don’t have a strong voice. If I had advice for young people, it would be to not let where you are from or your circumstances define you or be a deterrent to accomplishing your goals.” Cano has the respect and the admiration of Winslow’s citizens and city staff alike, according to Lt. Blass. He added, “She is the type of leader who seeks solutions. Her dedication to the service of the City of Winslow goes far beyond her title of Mayor and it shows. She does not seek the spotlight or recognition and her ability to raise up the people who work with her without looking for credit or glory is the mark of her leadership.” The Woman of the Year title was awarded to Dana Marie Kennedy, the state director of AARP (America Association of Retired Persons) who was recognized for her service to the aging population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire presentation, including Cano’s statement and acknowledgement can be viewed on YouTube by visiting the Arizona Capitol Times page.
