By Tammy Gray With campaign signs suddenly sprouting up across the county, it’s hard to forget that it’s an election year. It is easy, however, to lose track of important election and voter registration dates. The last day to register to vote in the primaries is less than two weeks away. Voters must register by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 30, in order to cast a ballot in that election. Early voting begins on Thursday, Aug. 2, and continues through Friday, Aug. 24. The last day to request an early ballot for the primary is Friday, Aug. 17. Early ballots may be requested in person at the recorder’s office at the Navajo County complex in Holbrook, or by submitting a form through the mail or online at www.navajocountyaz.gov/recorder/earlyballot.aspx. Polls will be open on Tuesday, Aug. 28, for in-person voting. Four Navajo County races will be decided in the primary, since there are only candidates from a single party running for those seats. The field of contenders will be narrowed down to one from each party in another three races. Positions to be decided in the primary include county treasurer, a race between incumbent Manny Hernan-dez and challenger Dusty Parsons, both Democrats; Division III Superior Court judge, a race between incum-bent John Lamb and challenger Eduardo Coronado, both Democrats; Board of Supervisors, District 1, a race between incumbent Jonathan Nez and challenger Lee Jack Sr., both Democrats; and Board of Supervisors, District 5, a race between incumbent Jerry Brownlow and challenger Dawnafe Whitesinger, both Democrats. Races in which the field will be narrowed include county recorder, a race between incumbent Lori Justman and challenger Alberto Peshlakai for the Democratic nomination; Division II Superior Court judge, a race be-tween Robert Higgins and Morgan Brown for the Democratic nomination; and Board of Supervisors, District 3, a race between Sylvia Allen and Tom Poscharsky for the Republican nomination. Running uncontested for their party’s nomination in the primary for those seats are Michele Baker for county recorder on the Republi-can ticket, Shawn Taylor for Division II Superior Court judge on the Republican ticket and incumbent J.R. DeSpain for Board of Supervisors, District 3 on the Democratic ticket. The remaining county races have either only one candidate for each party or are uncontested. They in-clude incumbent KC Clark (D) facing off against Cameron Peterson (R) for sheriff, and uncontested races for incumbents Cammy Darris for assessor, Linda Morrow for school superintendent, Brad Carlyon for county attorney, Michala Ruechel for Division IV Superior Court judge, Jesse Thompson for Board of Supervisors, District 2 and David Tenney for Board of Supervisors, District 4. In addition to county seats, a number of state and federal races will be narrowed down during the primary election. The general election, which includes the presidential election and a long list of state initiatives, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 8, and early voting will begin on Oct. 11. For more information or to register to vote, contact the county recorder’s office at (928) 524-4194, or go online to www.navajocountyaz.gov/recorder/.
