Robert Walter “Bob” Heiden, 91, passed away on Wednesday, Oct 26, 2011, at his home in Phoenix, surrounded by his loving daughters and many other people who loved him. A celebration of his life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at his home. Bob was born Aug. 1, 1920, to Walter A. Heiden and Louise Marie Tremblay Heiden in Florence, Mass. The Heiden family moved to Buckeye during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Bob earned the nickname “Rosie” as a child in Buckeye. He graduated from Buckeye Union High School in 1937. He had the sole milk hauling route for the Dairy Co-Op, where he met his wife and the mother of his children, Verlin Evelyn Dains Heiden. Bob joined the Goodyear Farmers in 1937 for two years while still “doing the milk haul.” He had a successful tillage business in the West Valley during World War II and into the 1950s. He was drafted several times during World War II and even though he wanted to serve, he was told his service as a farmer was more important to his country. Bob successfully converted what was considered an unfarmable salt flat in the early 1950s in Cashion into a profitable working farm that is still farmed today at 115th Avenue and Broadway Road. He owned and operated Agricultural Design and Ditch Lining, in addition to farming in Willcox in the 1960s. Bob contributed to the building of Arizona in many ways during the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 104 (previously Local 83). Bob worked on most of the interstate highways in Arizona. During his retirement he traveled to the other 49 continental states in his motor home and visited Hawaii. Survivors include his six children, Bobbie Wiles (Don), Gerri Hether (Steve), Steve Heiden (Nancy), Pattie Sheahan (Greg), Jennie Housley (Larry) and Bruce Heiden (Sharon); his brothers, Bruce Heiden and Dick Heiden; his sister, June Flick; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Bob lived with Laverne Brown Heiden from 1986 through 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his son-in-law, Bub Hood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
