Petrified Forest Artist-in-Residence Judy Katz applies more detail to a work in progress during a demonstration at the Painted Desert Inn last month. The Chicago-area resident became enchanted with our area on a trip in 2010. When she heard about the Artist-in-Residence program, she jumped at the chance to spend more time amid the inspiring colors of the Painted Desert. For the last three years she has been working with the relatively new acrylic inks. She finds the vivid colors of the special ink to be well suited to render the multi-hued patterns inspired by the heart of the park’s petrified logs. To capture some of the more intricate designs, she often employs a delicate breath-powered pipette airbrush. Applications for the 2012 Artist in Residence program will be accepted through mid-March.
