The Standin’ on the Corner Foundation is planning to build the Eagle Pavilion behind the Hubbell Trading Post/Chamber of Commerce Building on Second Street in Winslow.

Standin’ on the Corner President George Cullum said recently that volunteers from the club have begun work on the project, which has both immediate and long term goals.

There is a stage in the area which is used for the organization’s Standin’ on the Corner celebration and can be used for other events by other groups. The old stage will be used for one more year but the organization plans to build a permanent stage within a year.

Cullum said that there are also plans to put in a sprinkler system so that grass can be planted in the area and grassy knolls can be put in place for people attending functions to use. He said that there are also plans for a concrete dance floor near the stage with crushed rock in front of the dance floor. The dance floor will probably be expanded most years and especially if activity indicates the need for a larger dancing area.

The Standin’ on the Corner Foundation is a volunteer group and the work being done at this facility and others built by the organization has been done with volunteer labor. The club built the Standin’ on the Corner Park and the Bulldog Park for the city with volunteer labor and donations. Both are assets for the community and the Eagle Pavilion is seen as a major asset being created for the city and its residents.

Cullum said that he would like to see the facility worked on and improved every year and used by many organizations in the community.

Immediate plans are to construct the knolls, install and put into use a sprinkler system so that grass can be grown, construct permanent bleachers and install underground electricity for lighting in the area. The rough estimate for the first year’s work is $30,000. The long-term project is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $75,000. Virtually all of the cost is expected to be met through donations.

Cullum said that plans are for running water and fencing and, eventually, a fenced area for children to use, accompanied by an adult. He said his vision was for one parent to choose to watch the stage show or some activity while the other accompanies the child or children in the play area.

The Standin’ on the Corner Foundation is a volunteer, non-profit organization and will welcome the participation from anyone willing to do volunteer labor or assist in the effort to better Winslow. Donations are a necessary ingredient for a successful operation such as this one or most of the activities that have benefitted Winslow.

Cullum said that he visualizes the area eventually having ramadas such as those east of Vargas Stadium and seeing them in almost constant use for activities such as birthday parties, even when there are no events using the stage or dance floor.

Sidewalks will be built in the area and there will be opportunities for vendors of food and other commodities fitting to the location and events occurring in the area.
