The Taylor Town Council voted last week to seek public input in the development of a town ordinance concerning excavation and mining within town limits.
Town Manager Eric Duthie explained that the Taylor Planning and Zoning Commission denied a request by Brimhall Sand, Rock & Building Materials to change the zoning of property commonly referred to as “Joe’s Pit” to industrial on March 1.
Town Attorney Sterling Solomon contacted Brimhall officials to notify them that the town has been working to develop an ordinance concerning mining, including correspondence with Brimhall and its legal representatives over a period of three years.
The commission recommendation was forwarded to the council for action, but due to the publication requirements for public notices, the next available meeting will be in May.
On March 2, Duthie received a letter from both Brimhall and the Arizona Rock Products Association expressing concern regarding the commission’s decision. They offered their support for an ordinance, though, and agreed not to bring the matter to the council at this time.
Duthie recommended a plan to the council to resolve the issue and develop an ordinance that would include public input. Staff was asked to implement the plan.
