The Lady Roadrunners are battling to host a play-in round game of the postseason. They entered Friday’s game at Winslow ranked 17th, but a loss to the Bulldogs more than likely will put them 18th when the new rankings come out this Tuesday. Holbrook did pick up a win on Saturday at Monument Valley but it may not be enough to pull into the top 16, which is where they will need to finish to be able to host.
Saturday’s win in Monument Valley broke a five-game losing streak for Holbrook with three of those losses coming in a busy four-game stretch last week.
Holbrook’s week started in St. Johns on Monday where they were shutout 15-0 in five innings by the Redskins. St. Johns controlled the game from the onset, scoring 14 of their runs in the first three innings. They held Holbrook to just 1 hit in the game.
That lone Holbrook hit came from Elena Philpott who went 1 for 2.
London Gardner pitched 2.1 innings allowing 14 runs on 10 hits with 1 walk and a strikeout. Arianna Sangster pitched 1.1 inning, giving up 1 run with a strikeout and a walk.
Wednesday, the Lady Birds traveled to Blue Ridge where they were again shut out. The Yellowjackets avenged Holbrook’s earlier season win in just five innings. Blue Ridge won this game 10-0.
Friday night Holbrook made the short trip to Winslow where the Bulldogs were waiting for them. Winslow jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning and by the time the third frame was done they were ahead 11-2. They ended the game early with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth, getting the 13-3 win.
Holbrook collected 5 hits in the loss. Philpott went 2 for 3 with a double. Micah Winn was 1 for 1 with a double. Alexis Young also doubled going 1 for 3. Heide Bahe went 1 for 3.
Philpott pitched four innings allowing 13 runs on 13 hits with two walks.
Saturday morning Holbrook traveled to Monument Valley for their fourth game of the week. As much as they struggled to score in their first three games they made up for it on Saturday morning in Kayenta. Holbrook won the game 19-15 with the two teams combining for 29 total hits. Sixteen of those hits belong to Holbrook who got the much-needed win to break the five-game skid.
Holbrook has three games left in the regular season. They will have hosted Snowflake on Monday, then will travel to Show Low on Tuesday. They end the season next Monday with a trip to Alchesay. Holbrook is 6-7 in regular season games going into this week.
Regardless of the outcome in their final three games the team will be in the 3A play-in round of the postseason. That game will be played on April 29, at sites of the higher seeded teams.
