Halloween is one of those rare times of year when the ordinary becomes magical. Streets fill with laughter, porches glow with pumpkins, and there’s an air of excitement as a parade of ghosts, superheroes, princesses and goblins, walk door-to-door asking for candy. It’s a night that reminds us how much fun it is to let go, be a little silly, and appreciate the creativity of our neighbors as they decorate their yards and get into the “spirit” of the holiday.

Whether you’re handing out treats, hosting a trunk-or-treat, or walking with the kids from door to door, Halloween is a celebration of community as much as it is about costumes. Simple connections — between parents, neighbors and friends — are what make small towns like ours such special places to live.

There are plenty of opportunities to join the fun this year. Holbrook’s Spooktacular promises candy, games and laughter. Winslow’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a trunk-or-treat, and Joseph City will host a carnival. Speaking of Joseph City, if you come to town don’t forget to check out Halloween House on Main Street.

So put on a costume, grab a flashlight, and step into the cool October evening. Wave to your neighbors, enjoy the decorations, and soak in the joy of seeing your community come alive under the glow of jack-o’-lanterns.

Halloween doesn’t have to be fancy—it just has to be fun.
