Holbrook fell to visiting St. Johns on Friday night by a final of 67-12. The Redskins defense held the Roadrunner offense to just 150 total yards in the loss, while their strong rushing attack dominated Holbrook’s defense.
St. John’s was the larger and more physical team on the field. Their running game gave Holbrook fits throughout the contest, and defensively, they disrupted any offense Holbrook was trying to find.
Holbrook fell behind 14-0 when St. Johns scored on their first 2 possessions. The Birds managed to get 2 highlight plays on the night, but for the most part, their offense was limited. Williams Kinds hauled in a Jonathan Sample pass over the top in stride and took it 72 yards to the house. Simeon Shaw scored on a 73-yard kickoff return for Holbrook’s other 6 points.
Sample completed 7 of 17 passes for 114 yards, with one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Only two Holbrook receivers had catches. Kinds had two receptions for 77 yards, with the long score. Shaw caught 5 balls for 37 total yards.
Matthias Montijo led Holbrook’s anemic rushing game with 21 yards on 4 runs. Shaw had one 12-yard carry, and Manny Rico rushed one time for 3 yards.
Defensively, Shaw, Gage, and Orlaun Salas led the unit with 8 tackles each. Devin Ambrose and Nehemiah Williams both had 7.
This week, the Roadrunners will travel to Kayenta to take on a struggling Monument Valley Mustangs team. Through the first two weeks of the season, the Mustangs have failed to find the endzone, getting shutout by St. Johns 63-0 in week one, and by Needles (Calif.) 47-0 last week. Based on the similar scores with St. Johns, Holbrook may be in for a close contest in Kayenta. The game will begin at 6 p.m. Holbrook time.
