A year ago, I stood at the edge of something I could barely see the shape of. I didn’t know exactly where the path would lead, only that it was worth following. There wasn’t much room for error. There wasn’t much room for anything, really, except work, hope and a quiet promise I made to myself to give it everything I have.
It’s been one year since I took over this newspaper and if there’s one word that defines these past 12 months, it’s trust. Trust that the readers would stay with us if we did right by them. Trust that the businesses who believed in local journalism would lend us their support. Trust that every long day, every careful decision, every late-night worry was worth it.
This newspaper has always belonged to the community. That didn’t change when ownership changed hands. If anything, it deepened. This year wasn’t about sweeping changes or grand reinventions. It was about quiet work that was steady, consistent and deliberate. It was about making sure that every page mattered, that every story had weight, that every edition we sent into the world was something we could be proud of.
It also would not have been possible without the people behind the scenes who pour themselves into this work every day. Linda, our editor, has been with the paper for 18 years and has been its steady hand through every season, keeping it alive even through the hardest times. Dani, Debbie, Ty, Talaina, Kathy and Greg — every member of the team has carried this paper forward with heart, with grit, and with a belief in what it means to tell the stories of these communities.
We built momentum the only way momentum is ever really built: slowly. One edition at a time. One conversation at a time. One new believer at a time. Some weeks were hard. Some weeks were harder. But every week, there was also a moment — a reader’s kind word, an advertiser’s renewed faith, a glimpse of what we were fighting for — that kept us moving forward.
As I look ahead, I don’t see a finish line. I see a wider horizon. I see more work to do, more stories to tell, more ways to serve this place we call home. The promise I made myself a year ago still stands.
When I think back to that first uncertain moment, standing at the edge, unsure of how to take the first step, I realize something simple and true: the path wasn’t waiting to be found. It was waiting to be made.
