At the Holbrook Council meeting on Feb. 26, there was a brief but concerning mention of eliminating our local Animal Control/Shelter or adopting extreme measures like shooting stray dogs. Just because something has been done a certain way in the past doesn’t mean it’s right or legal. This would be a huge mistake for our community.

Without local animal control, response times for animal-related issues would increase, and calls for help might go unanswered. While Navajo County does its best, response times there can take up to two days. Holbrook Animal Control responds much faster and is a vital service to the community.

Losing the shelter would endanger public safety and animal welfare. The Holbrook Animal Control/Shelter helps vulnerable animals, investigates abuse and offers valuable programs like low-cost microchips, stray cats’ programs, and a pet food bank to support families.

The shelter sees over 500 animals yearly, while maintaining a no-kill policy. Under new management, it has made significant improvements in animal care.

Eliminating or cutting this service would be a setback for both animals and the community. We must continue supporting our local shelter to ensure a safer, more compassionate town for everyone.

Sincerely, John Steven,

Long time Holbrook resident
