On Saturday, the new Winslow library will finally open its doors, and I’m excited to walk in for the first time. We’ve followed updates on the planning and the big move for months, and now it’s about to become a reality. Folks of all ages will find a place to explore new ideas, join clubs or workshops and just spend quiet moments paging through a good book. I can’t wait for that opening day, when everyone can step in and see for themselves what a wonderful new chapter is beginning for our town.
I love knowing that in addition to shelves of books and reading nooks, there will be spaces where neighbors can gather for new programs and events. It feels like a special gift to our community, a place that stands ready to inspire the imagination of children, teenagers and adults alike.
In a rural area, where resources can feel sparse or far away, a well-equipped library makes an even bigger difference. It offers opportunities for residents who might not otherwise have easy access to technology, learning programs, or cultural events. This library bridges gaps by giving everyone, from all backgrounds, the same chance to gain knowledge, discover new interests, and share experiences with neighbors.
Even though the new building has so much to offer, I know I’ll miss the old library. I grew up going there, just like so many other kids in Winslow, and each corner and every creaky floorboard of that building seemed to hold a memory. The old library, although no longer adorned with hand-painted pictures of Harry Potter and other storybook characters, will always hold a special place in my heart.
