The Winslow Public Library is coordinating with the Winslow Animal Shelter for a new program called Out of the Doghouse. Businesses, organizations and groups can sign up to go to the animal shelter for an hour and walk dogs. With over 70 dogs currently at the animal shelter, individual attention is in short supply, so dogs aren’t always comfortable with people when visitors come to adopt. They are often shy and scared. Having volunteers come visit the pups and take them on walks allows the dogs to develop social skills while getting some exercise.

September was the kickoff for the program, with the library staff leading the way. Staff and volunteers from the Friends of the Library spent a fun hour walking dogs in the beautiful weather the morning of Sept. 13. It was amazing to see the difference from when the dogs left the kennels skittish and a little shy to when they came back after a good walk all perky and happy. Many of them had never been leash trained so it was a learning experience for all! And the volunteers’ smiles showed that it was a mutually enjoyable project.

While the next few months have already been booked, more groups are needed to help with this program. If your business or group would like to volunteer, please contact Danie Therio at the Winslow Public Library by calling 928-289-4982 or email her at Brunett@winslowaz.gov. Don’t forget – if you are looking for a new furry friend, start at the Winslow Animal Shelter!
