The Lady Roadrunners soccer team is looking ahead to Thursday this week, which will finally mark their opening match of the season. The team had to push a large portion of their schedule back to get players qualified to play. Thursday they will finally take the field albeit on the road at Camp Verde to face the Lady Cowboys in a 4 p.m. tilt. Next Tuesday they have their home opener with Payson visiting Roadrunner Stadium. That match begins at 6 p.m.

Holbrook’s boys’ team had a busy week with three matches. Hosting Camp Verde on Tuesday night, the Birds fell 2-5 to the Cowboys. Camp Verde scored at the 18-minute mark of the first half. Everett Pack matched that score six minutes later tying the game at 1-1. The visitors added two more goals building a 3-1 halftime edge. They extended the lead just 30 seconds into the second half. Pack scored Holbrook’s final goal with under two minutes left in the match.

Two days later the Roadrunners welcomed St. Johns into Roadrunner Stadium. Holbrook exchange student Daniyal Aly scored early in the second half, tying the game at 2-2. Jahshua Cook broke the tie with a goal five minutes later, then Tildyn Larson’s goal gave Holbrook a 4-2 lead with just over two minutes left in the second half. Typically, in soccer that lead with that much time left would hold up. However, St. Johns managed to score once to pull closer, then scored again in the final 10 seconds of the match forcing overtime at 4-4. Neither team scored in the first 10-minute extra session, but St. Johns scored early in the second session and then held on to win the match 5-4.

Holbrook picked up their first win of the season at Winslow on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs are just beginning their program and Holbrook won the match 8-0 under the mercy rule. This week the Roadrunners, now 1-2, will travel to Payson on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match with the Longhorns.
