The Navajo County Community College Governing Board held a special meeting last Thursday to discuss the compensation range for the college’s president position profile. The board reviewed the 2021 salary range that was used when hiring former president Chato Hazelbaker, which was $185,000 to $220,000. Interim President Michael Solomonson suggested raising the low range to be higher than $185,000.

Board Member Derrick Leslie recommended making the minimum $207,000, whereas Board Member Kristine Laughter thought $190,000 was a more appropriate starting point. Board Member Frank Lucero preferred a low range of $185,000 noting the college may get someone with no experience. Board Member Rosie noted a housing and vehicle allowance would be a beneficial addition as well.

“I know that we have a budget to hire a well-qualified president a degree and experience, and I want to make sure that we are going above what we need to pay the salary for the size of this school,” stated Laughter, adding that the need for longer lasting presidents is crucial.

Lucero countered, saying, “Part of the problem, I see, is we don’t want someone coming just for the money, being here a year or two, to have their retirement than taking off.”

The idea of including a bonus after three years of employment was also discussed. Lucero and Laughter both agreed the need to counter the potential culture shock, with Laughter recommending candidates tour the entire college and its locations prior to hiring. Cultural competency was mentioned by Laughter as a matter of importance.

The board unanimously approved a vote to set the salary range from $195,000 to $240,000 with a vehicle allowance of $9,000, depending on experience. Housing allowance was determined to not be included and be used during negotiations.

The board also awarded a contract to Low Mountain Construction, Inc. for the addition to the Goldwater Building in Show Low for nearly $4.8 million. Fiscal Year 2025 budget includes $5 million for the project. The other two contracts were CORE Construction for $7.1 million and Canyon Building & Design for $7.4 million.
