My name is Shawn White, and I am both honored and thrilled to introduce myself as the new owner of The Tribune, a beacon of community news and stories for 115 years. Being 24 years old, my journey here might seem short, but it is deeply rooted in a passion for the power of journalism and a profound respect for the traditions of this newspaper.
This publication has stood the test of time not only because of its commitment to the community but also due to the steadfast dedication of the Barger family. For 55 years, Matt and Debbie Barger, along with Matt’s father, Paul, before them, have nurtured this newspaper with a deep love for our community and an unyielding commitment to journalistic integrity. I step into this role with immense respect for their legacy and with a heartfelt commitment to continue the work they have so passionately carried forward. In a world where very few rural newspapers are owned locally, the Bargers chose to keep the paper local to ensure central Navajo County has the highest quality of news possible.
I approach this new chapter with a promise: to uphold the values of honest, inclusive, and impactful journalism. I am committed to maintaining the integrity of our news and ensuring that every story helps us grow together as a community. I also bring a fresh perspective and a youthful energy, eager to innovate while respecting the traditions that have made this newspaper a trusted community resource.
We are at a crossroads of tradition and innovation, where we can embrace new ideas while cherishing our historical roots. My vision is to breathe new life into our cherished publication, enhancing our digital presence to bring you timely news and creating spaces where all voices can be heard. There are a rapidly growing number of problems that threaten a locally owned and independent newsroom, and a new generation of problems demands a new generation of answers.
Let’s embark on this journey together, with open hearts and open minds. I invite your thoughts, your stories, and your criticisms. This newspaper is not just mine; it is ours. It is a place for us to connect, to learn, and to grow. I am here to listen and to lead with humility and hope.
Thank you for welcoming me into your homes and your lives. I am eager to meet as many of you as possible, to hear your stories, and to strengthen the bonds that make central Navajo County so unique.
