Holbrook was hoping to carry over some momentum from their upset win over fourth-ranked Valley Christian on Jan. 6, but three losses in last week’s action still have them searching for wins.
Holbrook was in Blue Ridge on Tuesday night where they played very sluggish through the first half and trailed by 16 at the break. For a brief moment, signs of life showed in the third quarter when the Ladies rallied from 20 points behind to trail by just 1 point over six minutes. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to keep that momentum going into the fourth quarter where Blue Ridge handed them a 66-55 defeat.
Holbrook was led by Raelle Yazzie with 13 points. Maya Francisco and Deya Guerrero each netted 10, Holly Casamer had 9; Bailey Williams, 8; and Alayna Yazzie netted 5.
Hosting top-ranked Show Low on Friday night with what is still a short-handed team was not a good combination for Holbrook. The Cougars opened up a 7-point lead through the first period, then led by 12 at the break. In the third, they put the game completely out of reach with a 22-point quarter. The Cougars eventually won the game 69-41.
Holbrook was paced by Francisco’s 10 points. Guerrero added 9; Alayna Yazzie, 6; Raelle Yazzie, 6; Chelsey Begaye, 4; Shayla Attakai, 2; Williams, 2; and Casamer added 2.
Saturday, was another tough matchup for Holbrook when they traveled north to take on a resurging Monument Valley team. Holbrook’s scoring struggles continued with the team netting only 7 points in all four quarters of the 59-28 loss. Raelle Yazzie scored 7, Williams, 6; Casamer, 3; Sami Thomas, 3; Guerrero, 3; Francisco, 2; Begaye, 2; and KC Tsosie added 2 in the loss.
Along with losing the game, Holbrook lost two more players to injury, during the game. “We continue to struggle with being able to field a completely healthy team. Until that happens, we don’t really know what kind of team we have. Unfortunately, we are quickly running out of time to get enough wins to make the state tournament. This week’s two games are crucial for that to happen. We will be shorthanded again, but the bench players, who have been playing better will need to step up for us to have a chance,” stated Coach Greg Perkins.
Holbrook hosts Payson on Tuesday, then will welcome in a Winslow team who is also struggling on Thursday. The Lady Roadrunners are just 1-6 in regular season games, and 5-14 overall on the season.
