The Holbrook City Council convened Nov. 8, during which they received an annual report on the Holbrook’s Hidden Cove Golf Course by its manager Steve Rutherford.
Rutherford noted that the course was looking good, with just two bald spots on the course which will be fixed. Contractors stated that in about five years the pump house, which houses two pumps and its computer systems, will need to be replaced. “It’s kind of a just a heads up something that we might want to think about for the future. This year, the course hosted six tournaments.”
Council members discussed some potential uses for the club house such as for a party rental but Rutherford noted that significant work would need to be done on the space, specifically on the bathrooms and the upstairs, which has no heating.
The council also approved a resolution to execute a grant for Holbrook’s airport pavement preservation project. In the resolution, it stated that the State of Arizona will pay 90% of the allowable costs incurred through the project while the city pays the remaining 10%. Interim City Manager Randy Sullivan stated that the estimated cost of the project is $181,236, and the city will pay $18,123, which is budgeted in the fiscal year’s grant funds.
A resolution was also approved to enter into Arizona Mutual Aid Compact (AZMAC). The city has been a part of the previous compact that was established in 2014 but was set to expire Dec. 31 of this year. The new compact replacing it will become effective on Jan. 1 of 2024. The compact will be effective for 10 years or until participation is terminated.
The purpose of AZMAC is to allow political subdivisions and tribal nations to share resources during emergencies. “It is a way to request and or provide resources as needed in an emergency,” stated Navajo County’s Emergency Manager Catrina Jenkins. “It is also a way to request reimbursement for those resources as needed.”
During the summary of current events, Vice Mayor Mike Nilsson thanked everyone who helped the food bank raise $2,700 for the Christmas box giveaway this year. Nilsson also added that applications to receive a box are currently available at the Holbrook Senior Citizens Center. They are taking 120 applications, as well as standby applications, and will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23.
Mayor Kathleen Smith reminded the public that there will be a strategic planning session that will be open to the public at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday). She also mentioned that there will be a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on Nov. 30 at Gillespie Park. “We’re going to be sending out ornaments to the elementary schools and it’ll be a ‘Christmas wish tree.’” There will be craft and food vendors along with free hot chocolate and cookies.
In other business, the council approved a liquor license application for Holbrook Chevron located at 950 Navajo Blvd.
