Navajo County

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Navajo County announced plans to illuminate county buildings green for the month of November as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans. The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. Navajo County’s campaign will culminate with a public Veterans Day event on Saturday, Nov. 11. “First and foremost, thank you veterans and their families! Secondly, thank you NACo for spearheading this amazing initiative! The initiative highlights on empowering veterans and ensuring they have access to the support they deserve. It’s a great way to bring communities together and show their gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifice’s veterans have made. By joining Operation Green Light, as Navajo County, we can make a positive impact on the lives of local veterans. Again, thank you Veterans and God Bless You!” said Alberto Peshlakai, Chairman of the Navajo County Board of Supervisors. In addition to lighting county buildings and landmarks, Navajo County leaders encourage residents, businesses and other organizations to participate by lighting buildings green, or simply swapping one light bulb to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. Shining a green light lets veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported. Navajo County is also holding a special event on Veterans Day to honor veterans countywide. Veterans, their families and community members are invited to attend a commemorative ceremony at 5 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 11, on the lawn of the Historic Navajo County Courthouse, located at 100 E. Arizona St., in Holbrook. Admission to the event is free and attendees are encouraged to bring a photo of their special veteran. “We have a proud history of military service in Navajo County and we hope that lighting County buildings green can be a visible way to let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported,” said Navajo County Manager Bryan Layton.
