In a rare week for Holbrook football the Roadrunners played two varsity games this past week, picking up their first two wins of the season in the process. After going winless through the non-region or freedom part of their schedule Holbrook opened region play on Monday night with a 44-0 win over a struggling Sanders Pirates team. Sanders came into the game winless and early on it was obvious they would remain that way.
Holbrook did most of their damage on the ground with Matthias Montijo piling up 192 yards on just eight attempts, with three scores. Running mate Darnell Nez tacked on 126 rushing yards on just five runs. Mason Archunde carried four times for 25 yards with a score. Daniel John gained 16 yards, and George Gorman gained 10 total yards.
Archunde completed both passes he threw on the night, with each pass going for a touchdown. One went to Daniel John from 30 yards out. The second went to Simeon Shaw and was also from 30 yards out. Holbrook finished with 429 yards of total offense in the lopsided win.
Archunde led the team in tackles, with six. Chance Sahmie, and Darnell Nez were each credited with five stops. Holbrook had no problem putting pressure on the quarterback, finishing the night with six total sacks, two by Archunde. Darnell Nez, Larin Nez, Victor Saiz, and Auggie Saiz each had sacks. Maven Begay, and Shaw both had an interception.
Many Farms came to town on Friday night for a more traditional Friday night football game. The Lobos, much like the Pirates on Monday, came into Roadrunner Stadium not only looking for their first win of the season but still looking for their first points of the season, having been shut out in their first four games. The Roadrunners won the game 55-6, but Many Farms did at least find the end zone for the first time this season.
Holbrook scored twice in the first minute of the game and the rout was on. Once again, the Roadrunner rushing attack was center stage with Montijo gaining 105 yards on just five carries finding the endzone once. Darnell Nez rushed twice, picking up 71 yards, with both of his carries finding the endzone. Darren Justman carried twice for a total of 39 yards. Justman completed 8 of 10 passes for 150 yards with three touchdowns.
Simeon Shawn had three receptions for 86 total yards with one score. Archunde caught three for 60 yards. Williams Kinds had a one-yard scoring catch. Darnell Nez also scored on his only catch and run from 41 yards out.
Noah Padilla, Montijo, and Darnell Nez each led the defense with five tackles apiece. Archunde had one interception, which he returned 14 yards. Andrew Takala, and Damien Ohlson each had a fumble recovery. Mason Archunde kicked his first successful extra points, going 2 for 4 in those attempts.
This week will be another 2A Little Colorado region game where the Roadrunners should easily prevail. They will play at Greyhills on Thursday night with the game beginning at 6 p.m. Holbrook time. The Knights are 0-5 having scored just eight points this season. Those came in last week’s 48-8 loss at Red Mesa. Expect Holbrook to dominate much like they have the past two games.
