At last week’s Winslow Unified School District Govern Board school board meeting, the board recognized Marilee Ervien for her service on the board as she retired. Ervien was on the board for eight years and was presented with a metal bulldog award made by staff member Daniel Tafoya and each member of the board (except Allen Leonard who was absent) spoke a few words on Ervien’s behalf. They spoke to all the ways they have been professionally and personally were bettered by her being in their lives. Ervien still expects to help out where she is needed around the district but is excited about the extra free time.
The board also heard a presentation from six students from Bonnie Brennan Elementary School’s YANA (You Are Not Alone) club. YANA is a club started last year by a fourth grader who wanted to create a space where everyone felt more included. Club members informed the board of the things they have been doing last year, which includes games and activities that any student can join and feel like they belong.
Because this is a new year, the board held officer elections. Debbie Martinez became president, Joseph Hartnett is now vice president and Todd Wilcox is the board’s clerk.
In other business, and in the absence of Allen Leonard the board:
* Approved ratification list 901 for $4.2 million.
* Approved Monapoppy Dunton, for substitute/ emergency teacher.
* Approved volunteer Akeem Foster for seventh grade boys basketball.
* Approved various high school fundraiser items.
* Approved request from WHS football for coaches Brandon Guzman, Stacey Berg, Drew Luzier, Chris Garrett and Jordan Payne to attend the Glazier Clinic in Las Vegas, Nev.
* Approved a change to the meeting scheduled for May 2023. The Wednesday, May 3, meeting is now moved to May 1.
The next meeting of the Winslow Unified School District Governing Board will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the board meeting room, located at 800 N. Apache Ave.
