The Lady Roadrunner program is struggling. They dropped all three games played last week with only one of them being competitive. Holbrook opened the week at Chinle on Tuesday night. Holbrook’s offensive struggles continued with only four first-quarter points followed by just nine in the second to trail 39-13 at the break. Holbrook did play better in the third outscoring the home team by one, but the damage was done early in the 65-37 road loss. Nohead Aberle led Holbrook with 11 points. Freshman Maya Francisco added 10; Raelle Yazzie, 6; Nikol Gombos, 4; Deya Guerrero, 3; Brooke Tsabetsaye, 2; and Kim Billie had one. Hosting Page on Wednesday night, Holbrook put together their best effort of the young season despite a seven-point loss. The Birds trailed by three after the first. Aberle, Dishawni Yazzie, and Lei Smith each had field goals. Holbrook played well again in the second and trailed 23-16 at the half. The Ladies trimmed all but two points off the lead in the third thanks to five from Deya Guerrero and two each from Brooke Tsabetsaye, Sara Billy, Gombos and Aberle. In the final quarter, Holbrook had some careless turnovers which resulted in Page hanging on for a 48-41 win. Guerrero led the team with 13 points. Gombos added 8; Aberle, 6; Raelle Yazzie, 4; Billy, 4; and Brooke Tsabetsaye, Lei Smith, and Dishawni Yazzie each had two. Hoping to build on Wednesday’s good play momentum, Holbrook traveled to Tuba City and played very poorly. The team made just nine total field goals in the four quarters of ugly action. As bad as the offensive end was, the defensive end of the court was worse. Tuba City seemed to score at will and finished the half on top 39-6. They proceeded to win the game easily 71-24. Gombos led in scoring with 5. Aberle added four as did Billy. Coach Greg Perkins commented, “We were really hoping to build off our effort with Page, but the opposite happened. Not sure if it was being the end of a long week, missing some key players, or what exactly the problem was, but the team struggled mightily. We need to get things turned around quickly before our aspirations of a 14th consecutive state tournament trip fades away. We are getting some good looks offensively but just can’t score even on easy shots. Defensively we need to look at making some changes. Hopefully, these two back-to-back tournaments coming up will get us some valuable court time to come together as a team. Yes, our schedule has been tough, but we aren’t anywhere I had hoped we would be at this point. Still, a lot of work to be done.” After playing in Ganado on Tuesday, Holbrook will compete in the Round Valley Round Ball tournament from Thursday through Saturday. Thursday’s two pool games are against Safford and Pima. They will open bracket play vs Cibecue on Friday morning. Following this tournament, the team will have time off to prepare for the Chandler prep tournament held December 28-30.
