By L. Parsons The Winslow Chamber of Commerce continued its Good Morning Winslow series last week with host, Northland Pioneer College. NPC President Dr. Chato Hazlebaker added to that and said, “I am pleased to see how much NPC does for small businesses and I hope our business community takes advantage of the knowledge in that office, especially because it is free.” He then talked about the plans he has for improving NPC and the student experience at the community college. “Really, what we are about is the community, even though we are so spread out in the area that NPC services. I think Winslow is in a unique position to support the NPC growth that is bound to happen. Right now, we are working on increased enrollment, improved student success and improved sustainability.” He spoke about expanding existing programs and degrees at the college, and it becoming more integrated into the community. He said, “What we are most excited about right now is that we have funded and are ready to bring a Head Start facility to the Winslow campus. That will not be open until next fall, but it will be the first step in what we want to accomplish. First, more parents will be able to attend our college with childcare on campus. It will also allow us to have some hands-on training for our early childhood development students. This will help improve our student experience.” Dr. Hazlebaker also mentioned plans to bring clinical nursing classes to outlying areas such as Kayenta. “We have a center in Kayenta, but they have to come all the way to Winslow to take their classes. So we are really looking to help improve that to encourage more people to take advantage of our nursing program.” Craig Boston of the Small Business Development Center at NPC was also on hand and noted that the center provides no cost business consulting to for profit small businesses in Navajo and Apache counties. “We help small businesses from start up to selling and everything in between.” Other upcoming endeavors in Winslow mentioned during Good Morning Winslow include the Annual Friends of the Library book sale.
