By L. Parsons Seven-year-old Memphis Scofield was able to raise over $1,700 toward the Winslow Fireworks Fund last week by utilizing an entrepreneurial spirit and opening a lemonade stand. Memphis said, “I really wanted to have a lemonade stand so my dad helped me, and Amanda (Leonard) made some cookies. They let me set up at Relic Road because it was busy downtown.” Her lemonade stand was a hit, and more than paid for her supplies. She was also able to collect $60 in tips. From there, she decided to use her tips to help fund Winslow’s fireworks show, which is fully funded by community donations. Her father, T.J. Scofield said, “She loves watching challenges online and she wanted to challenge business owners in Winslow to match her $60.” They posted a video on Scofield’s Facebook page and the responses began flowing in. He said, “Some businesses of course matched the $60. Some gave whatever they could, $20 here and $100 there. We went around town and picked up donations from a lot of people.” Memphis said, “I wanted to help Winslow have a really good fireworks show.” Ultimately, thanks to Memphis’ outreach over $1,700 was raised for the fireworks show. This year, due to COVID-19 concerns, there will not be a ground show, however, “It promises to be one of the best we have had in 30 years. People have been very generous,” said Chamber of Commerce CEO Bob Hall. The Winslow Fireworks show, according Hall, is the best fireworks show in Northern Arizona and is funded by community support. The Scofields would like to thank Relic Road Brewing Company, Towne and Towne, Clear Creek Rentals, M & J Smoke Shop, RT Rentals, 3C’s Autobody, Dalton Motors, Martinez Pluming, Winslow Elks Lodge BPOE No. 536, Debra Allen Photography, The Winslow Theater, The Cherry Bombs, Joe’s Glass and Locksmith, Little Wonders Preschool and Greer’s Mortuary. The fireworks show will be held on Sunday, July 4, at approximately 8 p.m. To make a contribution to the Fireworks Fund, contact Bob Hall at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce at 928-289-2434.
