By L. Parsons The high school graduating class of 2020 has had to change their plans in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything from proms to graduations have been cancelled or postponed nationwide. Because of that, an area mother started a group on Facebook called “Class of 2020 Adopt a High School Senior Fans.” The group, started by Christina Gonzalez-Jaramillo of Winslow aims to pair graduating seniors with generous members of the public to lift each other’s spirits. According to Gonzalez-Jaramillo, “I was saddened by the news of the seniors not graduating, all of the hard work they have put in over the years and all of the senior things they were looking forward to.” Administrator of the group, Jonnie Vargas also of Winslow explained, “You post your senior and write a brief biography about them and the members of the group ‘adopt’ them. That could be contacting the student to offer words of encouragement or sending gifts. Basically, anything to let them know that we are proud of their accomplishments. Graduation is a big step in life and we are helping our seniors to know that we recognize that.” The group has grown to over 2,000 members from all over the country. Vargas said, “We would love to see more seniors posted here, and we need more families to adopt them.” To join the group, find them on Facebook at Class of 2020 Adopt a High School Senior Fans.
