A mother’s loss inspired an incredible act of generosity towards the children attending Bonnie Brennan Elementary School in Winslow last week when she provided new shoes for every single student.
Brenda Hayducovich Daly’s son, Kevin graduated from Winslow High School in 1995. Last year he passed away from complications sustained from a head injury he received 11 years prior. He was a star athlete at Winslow High School during his tenure there as part of the basketball and baseball teams.
Daly told the students, “My son Kevin went to school in Winslow and he loved basketball and baseball. He loved athletic shoes because he felt like he could run faster, jump higher and even do better in school if he had on the right pair. He collected athletic shoes and loved them.
“Sadly, Kevin passed away last year but he would like all of you to have a pair of shoes. My friends and family raised money through an organization called Shoes That Fit so that all of you could have a new pair. I hope that they make you happy and confident and make you do better in sports and school just like they did for Kevin.”
Nearly 420 children at Bonnie Brennan received a pair of shoes in his honor. Principle Troy McReynolds said, “We brought in all of the kids, one at a time and my office staff and I measured all of those stinky feet. We didn’t tell them why we were doing it, we wanted to surprise them today. Brenda could have picked any school in America to give these shoes to, and she picked Bonnie Brennan to honor her son.”
Through her kindness and generosity, Brenda can rest assured that Kevin’s memory has indeed brought happiness to these students and their families during this holiday season.
