Winslow will begin a year-long concert series in December. The series, which will feature musical acts from many genres is an effort put forth by Mayor Tom McCauley to, as he says, “elevate the quality of life for our citizens.”

According to McCauley, “This is going to be an entire concert series that is family friendly from day one. Every member of your family can come and enjoy the music.”
/wp:paragraph
wp:paragraph
The series will rotate through venues in Winslow beginning with the Winslow High School Performing Arts Center (PAC), located at 600 E. Cherry St. “We are working in conjunction with the Winslow School District to be able to use that space. And I will tell you, we have a number of fantastic music venues around our town. It is really nice to have these venues that so many people have worked so hard on.”

Funding for the shows will come from the promoter McCauley explained. “This is the very best part. I have been able to sit down and negotiate with the promoter. The City of Winslow will pay for the promotion, security, trash or toilets needed. In return for that, the promoter is going to provide the band, the public address system, the sound, and they will do all of the ticket sales. From the ticket sales, they are going to kick back to the city 20 percent of every concert, which, in return, will pay for our part of the deal. It will cost our taxpayers zero. The only cost to the public will be to those who choose to buy tickets and attend the shows.

McCauley also has a plan to give even more back to the community with these musical events. “Not only are we bringing really quality music to the area, and teaching some music history but we are going to afford our 501c3 organizations the opportunity to do the vending at all of these shows to earn money for their organizations. For example, if the Standing on The Corner Foundation wants to get a liquor license and have a beer garden or food sales during one of the shows, they can. Same goes for the Soroptomists or Alice’s Place or the Rotary Club. All of their sales will go directly back in to their pockets. We won’t take any of that from them.”

Since taking office last year, McCauley has often spoken about making Winslow a destination city for public art.
/wp:paragraph
wp:paragraph
“The first 12 months of this series is to get people used to coming to Winslow for concerts. They will know every month that something is going on here. Once that is established, instead of doing tribute bands, we will elevate that and do national acts. That will start happening next year. If we are going to be the cultural and entertainment ‘mecca,’ if you will, of Northern Arizona, we have to think big.

“We are already on the way with what we are doing with the Great Big Tiny Art Show, the Cinema Society, Standing on The Corner. There is so much art and entertainment that is going on in town. These concerts are going to take us to the next level. It will fill our stores, our hotels, restaurants and gas stations, people will take notice of our town.”

To get the word out about the shows, McCauley said, “There will be a marketing campaign that will reach all over the state. We will use the city website as well as our social media and other avenues. Beyond that, the Arizona Department of Tourism has said that they will help us get the word out, we have a fantastic ambassador in Bob Hall at the chamber of commerce, we have the mayor of Flagstaff willing to share the information on their social media. We will reach a lot of people.”

Reaching out to the other communities in Northern Arizona is important, according to McCauley, “We work in a regional framework. When we are doing well, we want to share that with everyone in our community, which consists of everyone within 100 miles of us.”

Follow the City of Winslow on Facebook for that announcement. We are looking at about $20 per ticket, except some of the bigger ones. It is affordable, family friendly entertainment.”
