The Little Colorado Medical Center (LCMC) in Winslow has been a community staple for many years. They offer a variety of services and that list is expanding.

According to Chief Ancillary Officer Doug Umlah, the services provided by LCMC are family practice, obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and wound care. “We also have specialists that rotate their hours. Those include cardiology, pain management, podiatry and more.”

Recently, LCMC expanded their primary practice clinic to include an Urgent Care Clinic. “We have changed how we approach the clinic. We have added some providers and the urgent care. We now have urgent care appointments Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Patients don’t have to be current patients of the clinic, anyone is welcome at urgent care. We have thought about expanding those hours but we aren’t there yet.”

The hospital has also expanded its primary care providers from three to five providers. “Currently, we are thinking about bringing a sixth family practice provider on board. This gives patients another option besides going to the emergency department. To make room for all the expansion at the clinic, we have moved our wound care department over to the main hospital.

Wound care covers patients who have incisions that are taking longer to heal, diabetic patients with wounds and infections,” Umlah continued.

“This saves patients from having to make more appointments with their doctors, going to the emergency room, or even having to travel to Flagstaff or Show Low for care.”

Umlah said, “We are really trying to develop an outpatient services program. We have lab, radiology, respiratory, physical therapy and wound care. It’s all coming together as a nice little tidy program. A lot of people in this area don’t realize that we have all of those services. A lot of times, they are referred to Flagstaff and we would like them to know that we have what they need right here in the community.”

The facility is also implementing a volunteer program to reach out to the community. Care Coordinator Keara Valdez said, “We are looking for people to come and join us. Volunteers can work on our surgical floor, assist with handing out meals or tidying rooms. We are also looking for people to play music and provide pet therapy or patient visiting. There are a lot of things that volunteers can do. We are even looking for some to help with clerical work like answering phones. Eventually we will have an information booth where a volunteer can assist you in finding the department you need when coming into the facility.”

Volunteers are being sought from age 14 up. “Basically, anyone can volunteer. You will have to pass a background check and have a TB (tuberculosis) skin test. When we interview you, we will find out what your interests are, that’s how your volunteer hours will be scheduled. During your volunteer shift, we will provide you with one complimentary meal as compensation. We welcome anyone who would like to apply.” Those interested can go into the hospital and fill out an application or pick one up and scan and email it back to volunteers@lcmcwmh.com.
