The Winslow Unified School District Governing Board met last week in front of a packed house at the Performing Arts Center at Winslow High School. So many were in attendance to recognize their students for outstanding achievement on last year’s AZ Merit test. The governing board also made a landmark decision in allowing sixth grade athletes to participate on the Winslow Junior High School seventh grade softball team. The reason, according to WJHS Principal Deb Lopez is, “We are having a hard time fielding a seventh-grade team.”

Currently, WJHS allows sixth grade athletes to participate in wrestling and track. “Football and basketball are the only sports we don’t allow the younger kids to come up for,” explained Lopez. Board member Al Leonard asked, “Will there be an eligibility requirement for the younger kids?” Lopez assured, “Yes, they have a different system than we do, but they will have to remain eligible.”
