The Winslow City Council voted to amend the City Charter to change election dates in Winslow.

City Clerk Suzy Wetzel said, “The intent of this resolution is to call a special election for Nov. 5, 2019. This is a result of recent legislation signed by the Governor (Doug Ducey) requiring all cities to change their primary and general elections to the fall of even numbered years. Since our charter is very date specific regarding elections, it must be amended and the only way to do that is to take it to a vote of the qualified electors of the city. The November special election would be to change the charter.”

Mayor Tom McCauley said, “Historically, we have always had our elections in May. What this will do, if we approve the charter amendment, it will extend the current members terms by six months. This is where I have a problem with that. Our elections are in May because we don’t want to get swallowed by the state and federal ballot items. We are going to have to make a really concerted effort to get our message out and to get the information out there. This was not the state legislature’s finest moment, in my opinion.”
