WINSLOW — During the Winslow City Council meeting on Feb. 26, Vice Mayor Bob Schlesinger shared with the Winslow City Council his experience at the same day Navajo County Board of Supervisor’s meeting. “There were several things on the agenda that were applicable to Winslow. First, and probably the biggest thing, is the levee. The Board of Supervisors received a signed report from the Army Corps of Engineers that we met with in October. The letter states that (they) are in full support of the project and have recommended to congress that they approve the first part of the levee project. The Board of Supervisors did approve the letter and the recommendation and it will be discussed during our next council meeting.”

The first step in the project will be the design phase for the levee. Winslow has been working to improve and replace their levee for over 10 years to be in compliance with federal FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) mandates. Being in compliance has the potential to lower flood insurance rates as well as redraw the flood zone map in Winslow, according to Schlesinger.

Schlesinger also spoke about the approval of the Board of Supervisors to allocate county funds to improve and maintain county roads around Winslow. “North Park is one of them, it will be sealed and part of it will be replaced. Highway 99 will also be resealed and have some maintenance done.”

Winslow City Manager John Barkley gave a status report. In it, he explained that his goal for Winslow is to make it a business-friendly community. “We are looking at our permitting process, trying to make it efficient. We want to stand out amongst our neighboring jurisdictions as a business-friendly community in Navajo County. We are also implementing a ‘buy local’ initiative to further that business-friendly feel.”
