Summit Healthcare continues to improve access to patient care by introducing a new app that could possibly change the way patients receive healthcare, all from their phone, mobile device, or computer. The new program called “SummitCares,” connects the patient with a board-certified doctor, anytime, anywhere. If an illness does not require an emergency room visit but is urgent enough to need immediate care, the patient can quickly log into the SummitCares app and speak with a board-certified doctor. SummitCares is not intended to replace a primary care physician but is available to patients needing immediate care for non-emergent medical issues as an affordable, convenient alternative to urgent care or emergency room visits. In effect since October, the free and convenient app is now available to download right to a smartphone’s store or marketplace. For those who do not have a smartphone, the same program is available online at summitcares.net. Summit Healthcare recommends that the app be downloaded and the quick registration process completed before needing care. Setting up a profile will take approximately 15 minutes or less and will provide the doctor with necessary background and health information, enabling the doctor to diagnose and recommend treatment. During a virtual visit the patient will speak face-to-face with a doctor using the built-in camera on the patient’s device. An audio-only option via telephone may also be available in certain circumstances for those who do not have video capabilities. The doctor will be able to diagnose, recommend treatment and, in most cases, even prescribe medication. While waiting in the virtual waiting room, health-related videos and other educational health information are available for viewing. The app will send a notification when the doctor is available. Anyone can utilize SummitCares for urgent but non-emergent ailments like a rash, sore throat, urinary tract infection, earache, sinus infection, fever or cough. This is particularly convenient for late-night illnesses or unexpected illnesses during travel and vacations. There may be a short wait time to speak with a doctor, but a doctor is usually available within just a matter of minutes. The app contains features that allow the patient to upload a photo (rash, pink eye, etc.) for the doctor to examine. It also allows the patient to add another caller to the visit. This is especially beneficial for students away at college and the elderly who may need assistance. This service is fee-based and a patient is not required to have health insurance. It is a flat fee of $49 per visit, which can be paid by credit or debit card, including from a flexible spending account or health savings account. If the doctor is not able to provide the necessary care and instead provides a referral to an emergency room or elsewhere, there will not be a charge for the visit. When the visit is complete a summary report will be saved in the patient’s visit history, which can be accessed through the patient’s SummitCares account at any time.
