Davey Beltran and his mother, Heather, were on their way home from school Feb. 3 when he spotted a little black dog hobbling by the side of the road right after the McLaws Road train tracks. They picked up the trembling, whimpering little dog and made a call to Holbrook Animal Control Officer Merrill Young. That’s when Davey realized that this was Romo, a dog belonging to Rick and Twyla Taylor, who was on a poster his teacher, Mari Smithson, had shown the class. She asked several times that week if anyone had seen him. Romo was taken from the Taylor’s car Jan. 28 at the Safeway parking lot. He was missed greatly and 40 posters announcing a reward for his return were placed all around town. Davey was so excited to learn this was that dog! When they came to the Taylors’ home, he jumped out of the car and ran to the front door. Sadly, the Taylors were not at home. This didn’t deter Romo, though. He high-tailed it around to the back yard and ran through the doggy door. That was when Heather called the Taylors with the great news. Shouts and tears of joy were heard over the phone. Romo was still three miles from home when he was found, but he was determined to get there. His feet were covered with caked mud. He was missing for seven days, but it seemed like seven months to the Taylors. Their happy reunion with Romo will never be forgotten. And the reward? Davey happily chose to give half of it to Young to use at the Holbrook Animal Shelter.
