The Lobo cross country team sponsored the sixth annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot as a fundraiser Nov. 24, and hosted one-mile and 5K runs for both men and women.

The top three runners in each age group were awarded medals, while the top runner in each race took home a turkey. The second and third place winners in each race took home pies to enjoy with their Christmas dinners.

The first runner to cross the finish line was Joseph Peterson, who ran the men’s one-mile run and finished in 5:46. Bergen Bailey followed up in second place with a time of 8:56 and Reaves Hiatt came in third a few seconds later at 9:09.

On the women’s side, Debra Toya, at 10:45, took home the turkey, while Gracie Lundberg, who finished in 11:30, and Claire Hiatt, at 11:32, each earned a pie.

While those winners crossed the line, the 5K runners were still far out on the course, but not for very long. Bryce Palmer was the fastest of all the men at 20:53, Jace Applegate followed at 23:11 and Brad Rugel crossed the line at 23:40.

The turkey for the women’s 5K was won by Juliett Wilhelm in 25:08. Cyndee Nichols followed up with a time of 26:18 and Brettleigh Wilson took third in 28:48.

The winners of their respective age groups were, for the men’s one-mile, Jayden Zook, Bergen Bailey, Jayten Hiatt, Joseph Peterson and Steve Real. In the women’s one-mile, the blue-ribbon medals went to Gracie Lundberg, Katie Palmer, Jennifer Palmer and Debra Toya.

In the 5K, the men’s winners were Jack Busch, Ty Applegate, Bryce Palmer, Levi Flake, Brad Rugel and John Boone. The top women in each category were Braelynn Peterson, Brettleigh Wilson, NaElle Stinnett, Juliett Wilhelm and Doreen Gatewood.

The Town of Snowflake generously provided the golf course as the venue for the race, and a number of local businesses provided financial support and other help. The team would especially like to thank Hardcore Construction, Ace Hardware, Rodeo Video, Ed’s IGA, Ballard Truss, Silver Creek Pharmacy, and Summit Healthcare/Snowflake Medical Center for their willingness to help and support Lobo cross country.

The Lobo cross country team, led by Coach Lynn Johnson, offers thanks to all of the many runners, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who made the 2016 Turkey Trot possible.
