equestrian center

and Linda Kor

The Winslow City Council met Oct. 11 and gave approval to the sale of approximately 15 acres in the Pioneer Acres Subdivision for the development of an equestrian center. The former golf course is located east of North Park Drive and north of Interstate 40, and will be sold to Albert J. Jenkins and Penny M. Bowers for $22,500.

The property is listed as agricultural residential, and the buyers intend to use the property for commercial horse boarding, and equestrian clinics and shows. There will also be a residence built on the property.

In a letter to Community Development Director Paul Ferris, Jenkins and Bowers outlined their intended use for the property, which will include layovers for overnight horse transporters for travelers along I-40, horseback riding lessons, horsemanship clinics and schooling shows. The layout for the property would include a residence, office, competition arena, 24 horse stalls, multiple corrals, and RV parking with electrical and water hook-ups.

It was also noted that in order to accommodate dark sky concerns, outdoor lighting will utilize motion sensors and timers when possible. Horse manure would be used for landscaping and gardening, with none going to the landfill.
