Winslow City Hall

Members of the Winslow City Council held a budget work session prior to their regular May 10 meeting.

Finance Director Elias Jouen gave the council information on the budget in an easy to understand line-by-line presentation.

During the regular meeting, City Manager Stephen Pauken reported on recent city activities and introduced Navajo County Supervisor Jesse Thompson, who spoke about the Winslow Levee, which will be longer and stronger. The date and time of a public meeting on the levee will be announced soon.

Animal Control Officer Stratton Salyers reported on the animal care facility and activities there.

Director Bob Hall gave the quarterly Chamber of Commerce report. He stressed the Midsummer Day in Winslow scheduled Aug. 13, with a variety of activities featured.

Seven people spoke during the call to the public. Most spoke about a letter from the Navajo Human Rights Commission asking the council to oppose renewal of some liquor licenses. Brenda Graham spoke about the NAACP and its work to improve relations with all citizens. Most of the speakers supported the letter mentioned above, with some offering the reminder that the council does not have the power to approve or deny a liquor license application.

In other action, the council:

* Approved an ordinance authorizing the sale of property west of the Falcon Restaurant to Northland Builders, Inc. for $12,000. The document requires the buyers to make improvements on the property within five years.

* Proclaimed May 15-21 as Police Officers Memorial Week, May 19 as Police Memorial Day, May 16-22 as Emergency Medical Services Week and May 21 as Kids to Parks Day.

* Approved the consent calendar, including the check register and minutes of the April 26 council meeting.
