A Chinle girl has died following an incident that took place on Saturday at Clear Creek. According to the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:30 a.m. on May 7, a Reserve Officer’s Training Course (ROTC) unit from Chinle was conducting a rope/zip line exercise crossing Clear Creek south of Highway 99 near mile marker 38.4. ROTC student Marisa Trujillo, 17, was crossing the creek when she intentionally unclipped her carabiner safety clip and dropped to the river below. She fell approximately 60 feet into the water feet first. A safety diver was in the water at the time as a safety precaution and reached the location where she entered the water in a matter of seconds, but was unable to locate her and she did not resurface. Members of the Winslow dive team recovered her body about two hours later. Marisa reportedly told others of her intention to drop from the line and was told not to do it. Other students have apparently done this in years past during this training.
