Lisa Jayne The Theatrikos Theatre Co. will present a staged reading to encourage further development of Lisa Jayne’s one-act play Pleiades Rising at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at the Doris Harper-White Community Playhouse, located at 11 W. Cherry Ave. in Flagstaff. Author, playwright and director Darby Sue Winterhalter Löfstrand is directing the reading. This event is free and audience feedback is encouraged to help Jayne further develop her story and characters. “Pleiades Rising is the story of Cecilia Payne, a brilliant young woman in her early 20s, boldly coming alone from England in 1923 to Harvard College Observatory to work as a graduate fellow to pursue her passion of astrophysics. Despite the struggles of being a woman in a male-dominated field, she becomes the first woman to receive a degree in astrophysics, and makes the paradigm-shifting discovery of what makes up the stars, and, in turn, discovers the makeup of her own character,” noted Jayne, explaining the play’s storyline. Jayne grew up in Gilbert, attended Northern Arizona University for her undergraduate degree and received her MFA in Playwriting and Screenwriting from Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. She is the artistic director of White Mountain Regional Theater in Show Low, and teaches/directs productions at Northland Pioneer College in Snowflake. Her plays, including One Week: An Uncommon Love Story, The Obituary and Coeur d’Alene, have been produced at White Mountain Regional Theater and NPC’s Performing Arts Department. She directed Aristophanes’ Women in Congress in April 2015 performances for NPC. She was also appointed to the Arizona Commission on the Arts in February 2015. She is currently an academic adviser for NPC at the Show Low-White Mountain Campus. She is married to Navajo County Manager James Jayne and resides in Show Low.
