By Naomi Hatch The Taylor Town Council approved the call for the Aug. 30 primary election and the administration of the election by the Navajo County Elections Office last week. Town Manager Gus Lundberg explained to the council that the last election was held in the spring of 2013. “Due to legislative changes at the state level, we were mandated to move or alter our cycle to a fall election,” he noted. Because there was an item on the ballot regarding Unisource for the first time the previous election, the town utilized the services of Navajo County. “We spoke at that time about the concept of contracting with the county to hold the town’s municipal elections,” he said as he requested approval by the council in order to give the county ample notification. “Every four years we are required to have the question of Home Rule options,” said Lundberg explaining that this allows the council, based on the town’s own projections of revenue and expenses to go higher than what they were in 1980, which would be the case without Home Rule. In addition, the three council seats now filled by Mayor Fay Hatch, Vice Mayor Shawn Palmer and Councilman Gary Solomon will be on the ballot, as well as the approval of the Town of Taylor 2015 General Plan. “The main thing is I request the county carry out our town election,” said Lundberg noting this would give voters only one ballot, rather than a ballot for town offices and measures, and one for state and federal offices and measures. Lundberg was asked how they would know which ballot the voter would receive, since the jurisdiction includes residents who are not in town limits, and Lundberg explained that it is done electronically. He said that a Navajo County representative will attend the April council meeting to discuss issues like that. “I think it’s worked well and wouldn’t mind if it continues,” said Councilman Jason Brubaker. A motion to approve the two measures was then passed.
