By Linda Kor A Navajo County Jail inmate awaiting trial on two separate homicides attempted to add a third to his crimes during an incident that occurred at the jail at 6:50 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 29. According to Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Molesa, inmate Jacob Vandewalle, 25, overpowered Detention Officer Jonicia Curley while armed with a homemade knife, also known as a shank. He obtained the officers keys and Taser, then manipulated the main door to prevent responding officers’ initial entrance to the jail pod. Vandewalle opened inmate Errol J. Wright’s cell, then used the Taser and shank on him. Officers then gained entry to the pod and Vandewalle surrendered without incident. The 61-year-old Wright, who is awaiting sentencing on sexual assault charges, was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Officer Curley sustained minor injuries during the event, but no medical attention was required. Vandewalle is awaiting trial for two separate inmate homicides, one that occurred in the Arizona Department of Corrections facility in Winslow in April 2014 and another that occurred in the county jail in March 2015. In this most recent incident, Vandewalle is being charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. The investigation continues and further charges are pending.
