By Naomi Hatch A request for recommendation of an amendment to Walmart’s existing liquor license was approved by the Taylor Town Council last week. The request was received by the town a month or so ago, Town Manager Gus Lundberg noted during the Feb. 4 town council meeting. “If we do not recommend the license, they can go above our heads and get it anyway,” said Mayor Fay Hatch. Lundberg read a letter from Walmart officials that explained that they were seeking the change at the request of local vendors and brewers who would like to offer samples of alcohol at the store on occasion. There will be strict rules for the sampling event, and one area will be set up so that only those participating can enter. “No one under 21 is allowed in the tasting area,” said Lundberg, noting that the letter states that cups must be left in that area. “This is just a once in a while thing,” the mayor explained. Councilman Gary Solomon moved to recommend approval of the amended application, and the motion passed unanimously. During the manager’s update, Lundberg advised the council that Walmart has hired 160 employees to date, and hopes to hire up to 180. Vice Mayor Shawn Palmer said that he knows of many local people that were employed. Lundberg said a few have transferred from the Show Low Walmart, mostly those in management positions who are familiar with the company. He also said that the Taylor Walmart will be a 24-hour store, but they will gauge it as they go. The grand opening is on track to be held on Wednesday, March 9.
