This winter, the Navajo Nation Department for Self-Reliance (DSR) is providing eligible DSR customers with a one-time winter assistance payment to assist them in meeting the increased cost for basic needs during the winter months. In addition to helping the families meet the costs of heating their home during the winter season, it will also assist families with school aged children in meeting the additional expenses incurred for basic needs such as food, clothing, utilities and household items during the time they are at home during the winter school break. “Many of our customers will have additional expenses while their children are at home during the school winter break. They get just enough assistance to make ends meet and when their children are at home and indoors, they will need more food and heat than usual. This winter assistance payment is provided to all our customers, even those without school-aged children. With this added assistance, the DSR wishes to express good will and holiday cheer to our DSR families,” stated DSR Department Manager III Roxanne Gorman. To receive DSR benefits you must meet eligibility requirements, care for a minor child and participate in authorized work activities. The DSR staff support customers as they work to reach their goals in education, training, job skills and other services, helping them overcome the challenges to become employed and self-sufficient. To inquire about the winter assistance payment, DSR customers should contact their local office, including Chinle at (866) 700-5175, Fort Defiance at (866) 860-9549 and Greasewood at (928) 654-3910.
