One person died in a house fire on Sunday, Nov. 1, in Overgaard. The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2872 Deer Trail in Overgaard at 11:49 p.m. on Sunday regarding a reported structure fire. Deputies arrived on scene to see the residence fully engulfed in flames. Witnesses advised a male subject lived alone there and they had not seen him come out of the residence. The Heber-Overgaard Fire Department came upon human remains within the burnt structure. The scene was secured until county criminal investigators and the fire marshal could conduct an investigation as to how the fire started. The remains were transferred to the county medical examiner for positive identification. This is the fifth house fire in two weeks that has occurred in NCSO’s jurisdiction. Causes range from faulty electrical wiring to improper disposal of ashes and malfunctioning space heaters. As winter approaches, Sheriff KC Clark encourages residents to check their heating systems and fireplaces for proper ventilation, and insure they are in good working order. Ashes must be disposed of properly, not left on a front or back porch. As the weather gets colder, be aware of pets that reside outside and are subject to the elements, and take them in as the weather warrants.
